What is silence for you?

Bri

Silence for me is…

my seconds-apart clocks ticking out of sync

the rustling of my hamster finding warmth within her cage

the squeaking of floors both above and below me

babies crying along side their abused mothers

the building door and car doors slamming

the ting and bubble of my floor radiator

a group of birds reciting melodies

the humming of this Earth’s electricity

I listen closer, press my ears against thin air

Hear that constant siren, faint enough that I don’t careAbove

It’s deafening cry drowning out the petty goings on
Of some middle-of-the day-street.

My head was down,
And didn’t see it rushing past,

But it’s thundering bellow pried my ears wide open.

As the howl rolled into the distance,
Where it would surely become the ire of some poor’s soul,
I thought of what I ate for breakfast.

And found that a little odd…
